Finding your Inner “Lambchop”

Finding your Inner Lambchop!

We got a puppy just after Thanksgiving last year. She is a miniature white Schnauzer. (I had not realized they can be all white. I knew the black/grey type). Here is a picture of her with her namesake. She was really small when she came to live with us!

Lambchop is a real treat for us to have around. She has a great little personality and is extremely playful.

She particularly loves to play outside in the mud…

Part of my relationship with her is her insistence on a daily walk when it gets light outside. I am up early every day and part of my routine is to work in my woodshop for a few hours, and then go to work. Lambchop likes to join me, and I have a tie up at the garage door and she hangs out with me and gets to be outside.

Once the sun comes up she knows it is her time! She comes into the shop and starts talking to me! Jerry, Jerry come on! Lets go! Take me for a walk!! (Of course she does not really speak English! But she says this in her own Lampchop set of roars while prancing around to get my attention). Needless to say, I can not resist or ignore this for long.

I grab a cup of coffee, put some training treats in my pocket, leash her up, and off we go.

As we walk up the driveway, a sense of calm and peacefulness wash over me. It is quiet and cool in the morning, and Lambchop is smiling at me! She is so happy to be out and about. It is truly as special time for us both. I spent many years out in the country in Vermont in my early 20’s, and I think this brings me back to that happy, simple time. (Thanks Lambchop!)

I am training Lambchop to run off-leash and return when I call! (thus the treats in my pocket!).

Our route is to walk up to the end of the block, double back past our house, and then a short way further to a cul-de-sac that has some houses and woods. At the corner, I instruct the Chopster to sit and stay. I take off her leash, she sits/stays, I give her a treat, and tell her Run!! Off she goes…… Chasing either a squirrel or a bird or whatever she spots. In these moments, I sense a great joy as I watch her. She appears to me to be so happy and free while running like this. I think she is doing what she was naturally created to do, run and chase. I feel so good standing there, sipping my coffee, and watching her just being “Lambchop”! It is such a wonderful way to start my day!

Well today, I thought about this a bit more than usual while she was running and having fun. It struck me that this is exactly what makes me the happiest, helping others get in touch with, and express their “Inner Lambchop” or to be more clear, what they were put here to engage in and accomplish. It is the thing that makes me the happiest, the most content, and the most satisfied.

This is exactly the purpose of the class and the coaching I engage in based on the book, “If your life were a business, would you invest in it” by John Eckblad and David Kiel, McGraw/Hill 2003.
